I was a fanatic on this exact subject for about two years. :-) Now, I
just study. :-)
I bought, if memory serves, four commercial programs and tried out
many of the free ones. My choice was mnemosyne. First, I prefer open
source; I loathe the idea of passively submitting to a "black box"
whose judgement I can't verify for myself. And I have no reason to
suspect that mnemosyne will switch to commercial/closed. Of the open
source programs, I appreciate the clarity of mnemosyne's python code,
which I can read for myself and thus understand perfectly without
depending on some marketing verbiage etc. Also, just as others here
will say, I like the clean interface.
About algorithms: I worked very hard on every aspect of this matter,
and my advice is to avoid wasting the time that I did, and just trust
the program and don't worry about it. (How can I say that when I just
said I like understanding for myself how it works? Well, for one
thing, I'm not trying to sell you something... )
Compatibility? Just trust and commit to one program.
Much more to say, no time.
End.
