No one has said that there is a problem with the upgrade (though Luiz
will need to move to Windows 2000 to take advantage of all the
features). Luiz is just asking for a little extra time.

For Vircom to announce out of the blue that all support will end in less
than a month seems a bit radical. Sure, other companies practice forced
upgrades, but this is a change in policy for Vircom, one which caught us
off guard (we just upgraded to ModusMail 2 from 1.x a month ago).

I think it's particularly troublesome given that we're headed into the
holiday season as Vircom tends to close on holidays. I'm not begrudging
them that (I don't work holidays either), but it doesn't leave some of
Vircom's more conservative customers a whole lot of time.

Many people on this list downloaded the latest ModusMail and installed
it within an hour or two of its having been released. We're a bit more
conservative. We downloaded it and are in the process of testing it. If
everything goes well, we may install it in a week or two.

There are many administrators who would consider even our approach
brash. However, given the spam epidemic, we feel compelled to upgrade to
ModusMail 3 earlier than we would otherwise.

I can't speak for Luiz, but for us, the problem is the Web mail. The
ModusMail 2.x and 3.x Web Mail component looks radically different than
earlier versions. As a result, we have to make all new screen captures
and instructions for our FAQs and tutorials and put together a mailing
to all of our customers so that when the change comes, they are not
caught off guard. Consequently, we're still running the old VOPMail Web
against ModusMail 2 because we haven't had a chance to finish up the new
documents.

And this is just us. We maintain VOPMail and ModusMail installations for
several customers. We can't just go to their office and shut them down
unannounced while we upgrade their servers. We have to schedule that
with the customers weeks ahead of time.

So, I don't know why exactly Luiz wants a little extra time: there could
be many reasons. And I don't think it's unreasonable of him to ask for
it.

I agree, Something isn't quite kosher here.

I have never, I repeat,"Never" had an issue with upgrading modus. The
only
issue I can see is the change from NT 4.0 to Win 2000 advanced Server to
take advantage of the web based mail.

I to am a small ISP and cannot afford to continually add hardware. I
was
given time to do the hardware and software upgrade and everything went
smoothly.

Roger that...

Like I said there must be one piece missing from this puzzle. I ASSumed
the
individual was getting upgrades in some manner but was not entitled to
upgrade to a higher level at minimal or no cost. Perhaps he is about
to
find out this is his lucky day, or perhaps Vircom is about to find out
it
has been doing virus support for free. :-)

Cary

Cary,

Be assured that Vircom will work with any client that might still have
an
issue with upgrading from version 1.4.

Your statement doesn't seem to apply in this case; we are not requiring
any
client to purchase an upgrade - it's included in the service that
provides
anti-virus updates. If someone does not currently have an active plan on
his
modus server, he is already not receiving anti-virus updates.

Richard.
