Depending on how many queries you service, you might consider a DNSOne
from infoblox.. They are a little pricey (~$9k+$1.5k/yr) but it is a 1U
hardened *nix box running BIND 9. They are very reliable and have a
hot-standby port which allows you to stack 2 of them for very solid DNS.
I handle about 600k queries per hour or so, which doesn't seem to affect
them at all, plus you can add additional users and give them permissions
to an individual domain to let users fiddle with their own DNS.

Email me off list if you want more info and my sales contact.

Hi Jerod,

As someone already ointed out there has been considerable traffic on
several discussion boards regarding the Win 2K3 DNS. IMHO it would be
best for you to consider using a *nix box and BIND. For what it is worth
you would need far less hardware for a *nix DNS server.

I have actually seen a Pentium 133Mhz with 256Mb RAM handle approx.
30,000 domains taking a significant number of queries per second (the
domain took over 20,000,000 web hits a day! Approx. 1.5 million visitors
per day!).

Do any of you have any experience setting up a Windows 2003 DNS Server
as an ISP based solution? We have some old DNS servers we need to
upgrade and we are going to use 2003 DNS and I would like to know what
pitfalls to watch out for.
