Michael,
Just for the heck of it, why not put some good pictures of it up on a
website, tell us what it is and give a detailed condition description
and see if any MOPO members are interested in buying it? Costs you nothing.
There are precious little guarantees in life. If you have 5 decent
posters to sell, you should be able to meet Heritage's $5,000 minimum --
which is based on their *estimate* of what the posters may bring. If the
poster is truly is worth $3,000 or more, then you should have no
trouble. You might find Heritage's estimate on that one poster alone
would get you close to $5,000. And at least you'd know what their
experts estimate its worth to be.
But I have a question: Does it cost a seller anything to list with
Heritage? In other words, if the poster Heritage auctions for them
doesn't meet the reserve and does not sell, do they still owe Heritage
some money?
Bruce's 99 cent auctions were a stroke of marketing genius in the early
Ebay days, but now he's kind of boxed in by it. Since he is now running
his own auction site and no longer has to pay insertion fees based on
the minimum asking price or final valuation fees, there is no reason why
he couldn't continue to run most of his auctions as his signature
99-cent starting bid events and then have one "Premium" event every
couple of months which would have, if not higher minimum starting bids,
at least show displayed reserve prices which the poster must meet in
order to sell. This could benefit Bruce's operations and sellers. Often
it will happen that a reserve item is bid up to within 90% of the
reserve but doesn't quite make it. When that happens it is not unusual
for the seller to decide "what the heck" and contact the high bidder and
sell it for that price.
I am sure that over the years there have been a lot of people with very
fine posters who wanted to consign to Bruce, but are scared off by that
99-cent with no reserve policy (much as we bidders love it).
Bruce could ponder this on his vacation, since he won't have anything
else to do (heh...:)

for the record................i recognize that Heritage's Signature
auctions--especially the live/audience--section--can only include
"better" pieces. i have said on MOPO that should or when i ever sell
my entire collection, i want all my 1000+++ posters to go to
Heritage's Live Signature Auction. All collectors would love their
top pieces in a Live Signature Auction: the net prices to the
consignors typically are the highest. heritage has surpassed chrities
and sotherbys.
heritage's $5000 minimum as a matter of policy is their decision.
BUT, BUT, BUT............my original posting sought opinions on how to
best market a sungle poster valued at bwtween 1500 to 3000, and of
course, contributors add new angles to the discussions.

Hello Michael, Todd and Mopo
Yes, it is true we hope to have at least a $5000 minimum value consignment from
any one consignor. And since we feel there is significant price information from
our site which can help us and the consignor in that evaluation, we believe
it is more often than not
a fair accessment, though always willing to discuss.
We offer two very successful venues in which to sell material and do getter
better prices on much of the material we sell. So if a consignor has three $500
items and thirty $30-50 items we will do business and will seldom turn away an
opportunity to sell quality items.
We are always open to good consignments and try to be very fair in our
accessments.
Michael did have some nice items and a few that would normally be run in our
weekly venue. From my understanding, he wanted all in a catalog auction and thus
we were unable to work with him in this instance. I feel sure we should be able
to do business in the future.
I will often take a chance on rare items in the hopes they will exceed the $5000
mark with no priors to compare. Sometimes they work out very well. Sometimes not
as well as hoped, but we will always welcome inquiries as how we can help a
potential consignor and if value warrented will travel to you to discuss!

I don't know if that applies to just their sports department, but it doesn't
make sense.
For instance, if someone has 5 real nice $500. items, they would turn it down??

I was talking to heritage about auctioning some sports items about a month ago.
That department said thier new requirments are a minimum of $5000 total and a
minimum of $500 min per lot est. value.
I think that is going to slow the flow if that new policy applies to movie
posters as well. That would have to help emovieposter.com<http://emovieposter.com <http://emovieposter.com/>>
and MPB

2. heritage, although they do allow consignors to set reserves with20their
approval, only accepts consignments of posters totalling about 5,000.
Michael,
I think you have an extra zero on your figure.

yesterday, someone asked about the value of his 1931 one-sheet poster that he
might consider selling. it was a rare poster, and the only known sale was by
emovieposter (bruce) over 15 years ago for about 600.
this seller wants to sell it and get 3,000 net.
1. ebay is totally wrong for such a quality piece.
2. heritage, although they do allow consignors to set reserves with their
approval, only accepts consignments of posters totalling about 5,000.
3. bruce would clearly sell it, but he starts his auctions at a dollar. this
is risky for the seller. Surely, if the value of the poster is just a couple of
hundred, so be it!!!! bruce did his job in getting the fair value. But, that
wouldn't please the consignor.
i h
ave about 6 top posters that i want to sell. one, for example, is ALL ABOUT
EVE insert. bruce sales of it are as follows: $1,650 in 2008, $733 in 2005 and
$1,976 in 2002.
Is there a way for me to guarantee $1, 400 in my pocket or have it returned to
me? is there a way for that 1931 poster to achieve 3,000 net for that owner or
get it returned to him?
thoughts?
