There are so many variables in digital images, both taking the picture, editing
the picture and viewing the picture (although the differences are not what
differentiates Bruce's and Heritage's picture of the same card. While it's
softer, I'd certainly vote Bruce's image the more accurate without even seeing
the card in person.

Taking the picture: lighting conditions, camera settings.
Editing the picture: auto or manual correction, and/or deliberate
colour/contrast manipulation, file size
Viewing the picture: type and age of monitor, monitor settings

Digital images of flat paper "lie", even without manipulation, and the smaller
the file size, the less data to study.

Having a detailed written condition description even with a large image is
definitely the way to go. As for the SCARFACE card, I really doubt that even
when first printed, the white border was never that "white."

You can get a sharp image AND also accurate color saturation... just
increase the image color saturation level in Photoshop or any image editing
program. Also, if too bright, with same software, darken to the point closest
to actuality while leaving the tear still visible. It is all very easy and the
technology has been around decades. There is no reason to blame a
camera/scanner when common software is available to make an image look more
realistic. Nothing wrong also for a second image to show closer up detail, I
reckon anyway! That's where eBay has it up on emovieposter ;-)

I put "two different cameras" because that is what Sean put
(apparently incorrectly). I am looking at the actual card, and the image we
have accurately depicts the coloring, while the other image completely distorts
the coloring, making it appear somewhat white.

Given the choice of my "lesser quality" camera which accurately
depicts the coloring, and a scanner which gets better image detail quality but
which greatly distorts the coloring, I know what I choose, but each seller has
to go with what they prefer.

I also wonder if it is the scanner which distorts the coloring, or if
the image was brightened after the fact. One would have to see their original
unrestored scan to know for certain, and I doubt I will ever see that.

Another possibility is that the card WAS originally white a couple of
years ago, but that it has undergone huge darkening in the intervening two
years!

to see what I am talking about.

And while it isn't possible to do so over the internet, I prefer to
use as bright a light as possible when inspecting cards for purchase. I would
much rather see the large tear in a card before I purchase it than be surprised
when it arrives thinking "yeah, I guess that could have been a tear and not a
crease, wish the photo had been clearer."

Full Disclosure - if the card remains at present bid levels, I will
certainly be making a bid (and placing it knowing there is a large not
noticeable tear in it).

What you are seeing is that they "brightened" the image
artificially, making the card look far more "white" than it actually is in
"real life". That had the unintended side effect of also brightening the tear,
making it far more noticeable than it is in "real life".

Two different cameras actually view the same card the same way,
but it takes a human being to manipulate the image so that it appears other
than it actually is in "real life".

I was intrigued by the Scarface card as it looked somewhat
familiar to me and a quick search of the Heritage archives shows that this
exact card was auctioned two years ago this month, so it will be interesting to
see how it performs in a different venue now.

Also interesting to me was a comparison of the large scan of
the card from Emovieposter as to the one Heritage made.
Many times we hear vague references to "some" auction houses
and how "they even trick you with the images, using "stock images" or "enhanced
images"" and now at least for one item we can see how they compare against each
other. I certainly found it strange that a large tear in the top border of the
card is clearly visible in the Heritage scan, but is nearly invisible in the
Emovieposter scan.
I think both companies grade the card about the same, but it is
hard to tell as Heritage uses a 10-point grading system (giving this one a 7
out of 10), while Emovieposter uses a Fair to Fine scale, which I think
translates to a 7-point scale making comparisons much more difficult but makes
this a 5 out of 7. I certainly don't think Emovieposter is enhancing or
softening their image, but it does show how two different cameras can view the
same card.

Usually I use these last day "reminder e-mails" to point out
the many items closing in a few hours that are still at just a few dollars
each. But Thursday night's 666 single lobby cards (including 121 title cards
and 41 signed cards), closing tonight, on the 18th of March, starting in just
13 hours, currently includes lots of REALLY incredible values on items that
usually sell for between $25 dollars to two hundred dollars, and currently many
of these are languishing at low, low, prices, quite a few at "under wholesale"!
I certainly hope the savvy dealers like John Hazelton, Morrie Everett, Joe
Burtis, Marty Davis, Rich Halegua, and many others are all over these like a
cheap suit, because there is money to be made!

With just 13 hours to go, there ARE still over 100 of these
cards that are $3 or under, but I want you to go right now to the gallery of
ALL the cards and see just how many wonderful buys there currently are!
