Yes, that's a good question. That's what I also
meant by 'being safe with yourself'. I don't think it
is necessary a better question what you mention here.
Sometimes it is very easy to go 'inside and play', for
me at least. The more difficult part, for me, and
many others that I've met that deals with this issues
from residents to staff to supervisors to therapist,
and so on, is the sharing of the inside with others.
How safe is it really to discuss personal feelings and
issues that have been not only painful but joyful?
When I smile at work, I sometimes get yelled at by
upset residents for smiling, as if since they feel
pain at the time that I must feel pain too, that
smiling is not allowed when they are going through
something terrible. If I followed that motto, then I
would never smile at work.
