And if mother-earth why not mother-cosmos Gav ? The gaia metaphor I like. "Ishmael" is more of the same. The pantheistic notion (a la Spinoza) is also referenced by Dennett in Breaking the Spell - I blogged some quotes recently - he also refers to love of the world a "sacred" - so no way science is excluded from such a metaphor - simply enlightened by it.
