hey there,
divining the future is an ancient practice common to all cultures. it is
obviously pragmatically effective since it has endured for so long. it is
another window on myth. divination is based on archetypal resonance. it is
attempt to shed light on the unfolding divine ( hence 'divination') plan, to
intuit through an alignment with cosmic processes.
the lack of understanding and the naive dismissiveness regarding such subtle
and sophisticated technologies as astrology, tarot, i-ching etc points to a
fundamental flaw, common to many on this list: to deride or ignore or dismiss
what one doesn't (yet) understand. this is not good. this only encourages
stasis and stagnation.
although pirsig has repeatedly pointed out the central value of the myth -
reality being the product of the mythos - it is still a very difficult thing to
grasp. it is difficult because it requires a radical reorientation. reality is
the reflection of the endless interconnecting drama of billions of characters
all undertaking the same archetypal journey from ignorance to god-manhood.
as campbell said these archetypal resonances are energy-releasing. we acquire
more life, a more full life, with each discrete step along the way.
in the west our myths are disjointed. we have the 'freedom myth' (america is
about freedom...etc) which because it is unconsciously held --ie we don't
recognise it *as* myth (monistic), rather as literal (dualisitic..polar
opposites) -- presumes and maintains our imprisonment. we have to defend
freedom, enforce freedom etc etc.
the emerging myth is gaia. we are seeing it become more evident all the time.
planetary consciousness. earth as goddess.
myth is always fecund. it is the source after all. the fantasy genre of
literature is at best heavily mythic. this was tolkien's explicit aim (a gaia
myth and a freedom myth); donaldson also with his covenant series produced a
quality gaia myth. and harry potter is also evidence of quality myth. with all
there is a blurring of the lines between 'normal' reality and 'magic' reality.
this is key for the two interpenetrate. and this interpenetration is the whole
journey: we don't have two realities (duality); we have one (singularity) in
which the profane *is* sacred.
this creates the avalanche. there is only one reality and it is essentially
spiritual (ie intelligent). heaven is earth.
this intelligent reality unfolds according to cosmic laws which are recognised
and symbolised in divination.
