Steve: I assume you are referring to: "Certain people's preferences to maintain a blog instead of having a real discussion seems narcissistic to me." I didn't mean you or really anyone in particular. I do think that there is some serious narcissism going on in cyberspace these days. I guess it's there whether we see the evidence on the web or not, but the culture of myspace, facebook, and blogs seems to feed into it. It's seems like the worst kind of idolatry in a lot of cases: Make a virtual shrine to yourself to worship. Look how many virtual friends I have who have come to worship me at my shrine! I don't think that blogging is necessarily that. I assumed that you and Sam have focussed on that for a lot of good reasons. I figured that you felt you had gotten about all you can from talking with the people here, that you wanted to talk about things not necessarily of interest to this group, that you wanted to share your ideas without feeling bullied by certain people here, and that you probably had other reasons that I never thought of. In the case of this Caryn, I can't understand how someone wouldn't want to start here if she wants to discuss Pirsig. She didn't respond to my suggestion that she try moq.org so I can only guess at her reasons, and I suspect that she wants her thoughts on Pirsig to decorate her shrine. I could be wrong. I wish she would come here and tell us I'm wrong. I would love to have some new perspectives participating in this discussion. Matt, I was hoping you would respond to my question about the critiques of basing morality on suffering and happiness. Do you have any thoughts?
