Steve:
I think you and perhaps Ron make the misstake of thinking of culture as
only social. Pirsig defines culture as a collection of social and
intellectual patterns. Intellectual and social patterns are both
culturally transmitted. It's just that different types of patterns are
being transmitted. To distinguish between the two types, think of
copying a behavior versus copying a rationale for behavior. This copying
is the static latching of patterns that occurs on both levels. The
difference is what is being copied.

Ron:
I make a distinction between social and cultural because differing
societies may exist within a culture. I take culture to mean the whole
body of a thought system, and just as you say intellect and culture
stand hand in hand
No arguments there. I define intellect as the relationship of the
individual
With their culture, How one relates may influence their social standing
Within that culture and may influence intellectual values.
My main point here for the past few weeks is exactly what you stated,
That intellect and culture are two parts of one entity and may not be
Reduced to levels in the traditional sense except by the relationships
Previously mentioned.
