Chris

We have been through this before.
Should a factory treat its waste before dumping it in the local river, or
should they pass the profits along to their shareholders.

Which is a higher Quality. A clean public river, or profits for the
shareholders. After all the factory is not in business to break even and
the shareholders invested in that company expecting a return on their
investment.

That is the crux of the problem and that's what we keep going round and
round with.

I had suggested the word "stewardship". Not every one is capable of
building and running a large business, but when does $100 million salary
become the norm.

What amazes me is that when a company says to its shareholder that you
will be getting less return on your investment because we have to clean
up our act, the shareholders will start squirming, but if the CEO gets a
huge bonus, they see it as a sin of success and act as if they are
getting the money themselves.

In the long run, the house of cards will come down. The local river dies,
lawsuits will go flying, cancer becomes a problem in the community and
the company will end up paying way more than if they had taken care of
the problem in the first place.

So in order to distinguish which quality is better: profits vs. Clean
rivers you need to ask 2 questions. Which is sustainable? which will be
beneficial in the long run?
