In his book jurasic park, Michael Chrighton introduces a character named
Malcolm who is a mathematician.

In it he makes many observations a couple that come to mind.
He said "it's not save the planet, it's save mankind" In the whole scheme
of thing, we can disappear, and this planet who has been around for a few
million years, will recover in no time and do just fine.

Second, it was a comment about the failure of complex systems. that the
more complicated systems are, and the more they are interdependent, when
disaster strikes, it's a major catastrophe. Did you know, that a
according to NASA's own calculation, 1 in 100 shuttle mission will result
in a disaster? So far the odds are about right.

Yes Balance is the key. Take for example birthrates. In the old days,
biology dictated that you had to reproduce or parish. Now with the advent
of modern medicine, hygiene people are doing well. In fact they are doing
TOO well. So in a way, man has interfered with the biological patterns
with his good work and knowledge. Now comes the hard questions.
Now that we have already interfered with natural selection, who gets to
play judge, jury and executioner on both ends of the population spectrum.
1. Telling people that survival rates are good, and small families is a
good idea.
2. Telling people that they have lived a good long life, and now it's
time to go because now they are a burden and the system cannot afford to
keep people around past the age of ( insert number here).

When the Social security system was installed, they figured 70 years and
you were gone. Plus all this expensive medical breakthroughs were not
around.

Tough questions and tougher answers.
