"The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shock-proof,
bullshit detector." -Ernest Hemingway

Gav,
This applies to readers too. Might think about having yours checked.

hiya,
terrance mckenna talks - with a singular eloquence -
on the phenomenon of fractal geometry and its
relationship to the mayan calendar.

the mayan calendar is a complete calendar that is more
complex and accurate than any modern calendar. it has
13 lunar months and - amongst many other things - it
tracks the precession of the equinoxes, which is the
wobble earth's orbit of the sun exhibits. the calendar
also tracks the motion of the solar system around the
galactic centre - and it is this 'long count' that is
coming to an end on december 22 2012.

the mayan calendar exhibits fractal properties. the
longer time periods measured by the calendar scale
down into corresponding shorter periods. for example
the dynamics of the last 4500 years are paralleled in
the 44 year period 1968- 2012... ie the structure of
the graphs are identical.

the whole ride of history is compressed down into
smaller and smaller fragments of time as we approach
2012. it is a consolidation of sorts, in readiness for
the winter solstice (nth hemi) of 2012 - where the
fractal stops, literally. the graph literally zeroes
out. this is commonly referred to as the 'end of time'

the fractal analysis of the calendar is very
interesting and exhibits a degree of prognosticative
utility that is very interesting - for more see the
doco 'timewave zero'.

as for what this all means...? terrance doesn't offer
too much except to suggest, gently, the evolution of a
gaian consciousness.

in any case i heartily recommend anything by or on
terrance, and for those interested in biology his work
with rupert sheldrake (morphogenetic fields) is
fascinating.
