Along the same lines, a book titled "THE CHEMICAL MUSE: Drug Use and the Roots
of Western Civilization" will be published next month. The author (D.C.A.
Hillman) has a doctorate in both Classics and Chemistry and uses them both to
say, basically, Dionysian ecstasy is not brought about by beer. He's making a
case that ancient Greece was thoroughly saturated with hallucinogens and he
does so by way of a simple textual analysis. As he explained in an interview I
heard the other day, that whole feature of Greek culture was air-brushed out of
the picture by translators and historians but its all there in the original
material for those unblinded by prudery or prejudice. And as a student, I
appreciate the fact that there are academically respectable sources to cite on
this point. There is also Huston Smith's "CLEANSING THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION:
The Religious Significance of Entheogenic Plants and Chemicals". I mean, I
imagine guys like McKenna and Leary are not acceptable in that re
spect and I suppose suspicion is not completely unfounded. The whole end of
time thing is not something I can swallow but maybe that's just because I don't
understand the Mayans.
