Drugs ... artificial means of achieving a temporarily altered state of mind, and a different perspective on life ... well yes, but need to be careful about taking that kind of risk in the middle of real life and real responsibilities ... or becoming adicted to the altered state "instead of" real life. One of the reasons I've been an advocate of Sue Blackmore's enlightened take on psychedelics - "special" occasions, as you suggest. Anything artificial or virtual may seem like cheating or laziness, some might say "meditation" looked like a lazy option too, but I say a little variety is good. I wouldn't recommend casual or lazy drug-taking any more than I'd recommend casual or lazy meditation, or casual or lazy anything ...
