I think there are 2 issues here:
1) that social practices need to be under the control of the
intellect. ("The unexamined life is not worth living" - Socrates)
2) that high quality intellect (free-thinking, broad-minded,
objectivity) should overcome low quality intellect (uninquiring,
narrow-minded, prejudiced.)
