Platt says, "multiculturalism is based on the postmodern idea that all cultures
are morally equal, i.e, that they are neither "good nor bad," "right or wrong."
But it's already pointed out that the term only refers to pluralistic
societies, to societies constituted by several cultural or ethnic groups. What
Platt has described is only the most extreme version of relativism. The less
radical and far more common form of relativism merely denies that there are any
absolute moral values or that there is a single exclusive truth. Pirsig is not
a relativist, but those denials are not exactly hostile to the MOQ. It asserts
multiple, provisional truths and morality comes in five evolving flavors.
Hardly anybody would go so far as to say that all values are morally equal or
deny the difference between good and bad, not even Richard Rorty. This straw
man serves the conservative battle against multiculturalism, but this is a
political battle not an intellectual one. In fact it's essentially
anti-intellectual. It's usually just cultural bigotry disguised as morality,
patriotism, and religiosity. But the MOQ doesn't advocate relativism anymore
than it advocates absolutism and it certainly doesn't support the confused
drivel of ditto-heads like Platt. Get a dictionary, for Christ's sake!
