Marsha to Andre:

I hope your move went well.

Andre:

It did Marsha, thank you...though must say it's freezing here (-2 C) and
coming from Australia where it was 42 on the day I took off, a bit hard to
handle. Thank goodness for the jetlag (plenty of sleep) and central heating
(modern technology).

Marsha:

And why I think the MOQ as a theory is a spov that represents a better
world-view.

Andre:

In the paper I quoted Pirsig is quite clear about this as well:

'Within the MOQ, Pirsig makes it explicitly clear that the universe is to
be understood in terms of evolution. Pirsig's system is static, like any
other. He therefore has admitted to a decaying system and, moreover, one
that we are supposed to use as the basis for moral decision-making. But
Pirsig is clear also that his evolution is a true evolution - it has a
direction rather than being a meaningless pattern of changes. In fact, it is
evolving upwards towards the better from the worse.

Which has the following consequence:

*In the past, there was no MOQ.*

*At present, there is the MOQ (an improvement on SOM).*

*In the future, the MOQ will be replaced or evolve into a better system.*

The consequence is clear; by Pirsig's own pragmatic standards the MOQ is a
stop-gap (or provisional) metaphysics; it will eventually be replaced by a
superior metaphysics. So, ultimately, our means of understanding what has
more (or less) Quality will also be subject to change'.

I sense here that Pirsig perhaps not fully appreciates his own
accomplishment, or perhaps he is just very humble about it. I feel that the
MoQ is encompassing enough to evolve itself because of its Quality.

Marsha:

Yes, but still analogues upon analogues upon analogues.

Andre:

Yes, as Pirsig argues in ZMM; 'We constantly seek to find, in the Quality
event, analogues to our previous experiences. If we didn't we'd be unable to
act.We build up our language in terms of these analogues'(p243). And without
wanting to overstate the obvious, this applies to all the levels.

Marsha:

This URL brought me to 'Unauthorized Error 401'.

Andre:

Sorry, I have no idea how it got there.

Marsha:

I did read Ant's 'The MOQ and Time' a while back, and this might be a
good time to reread it. Unless you meant a different paper.

I think we agree. At least I didn't sense any disagreement.

Andre:

The full title of the paper I am referring to is 'The Role of Evolution,Time
and Order in Pirsig's 'Metaphysics of Quality' (January 1999).

Yes we do agree. I always appreciate your posts.

And thank you for the pics...they are very, very nice.
