Good morning Mel,

You ask: What was the meaning of the fragment: He therefore has admitted to
a decaying system?

Andre:
My reading is that, because Pirsig is very clear 'that the universe is to be
understood in terms of evolution' i.e. continual change (an evolving
'upwards towards the better from the worse') and since the MoQ was written
some 20 years ago, then according to his own intent, it's concept is already
20 years out of date.

This begs the question of what, and/or, which 'parts' of the MoQ he would
consider 'out of date'. Or even more fundamental: is the MoQ indeed
'static', as Pirsig claims. Well, he wrote it and upon this basis I'll
accept it.
In Pirsig's own words (from the same paper):

*It's gratifying to see that in this final criticism of the MOQ there is
agreement. The MOQ is indeed an evolving system of thought. It is written in
pencil, not in stone. As stated in **Lila** it is this same intellectual
evolutionary characteristic that has distinguished scientific truth from the
religious dogmas of the past. Hopefully, it will allow the MOQ to flourish
and change and expand where other more narrow-minded and rigid philosophic
systems have failed to adequately represent reality.*

To which I say: Amen.

Mel:

Second,
I found it interesting that the question came up of whether there
truly is cosmological evolution and no one pointed out that the
evidence for such (or its recognition from another point of view)
is referred to as entropy.

Andre:
Not sure if this is a question or an observation needing no response but
I'll do so anyway: IMHO the MoQ requires the universe to be 'ordered' indeed
this is where it gets its evolutionary dimension from. 'The ordering of the
four static levels would cease to be a viable basis for a moral framework if
cosmological evolution does not exist. The only basis for morality then
would be tradition and Dynamic Quality- pretty much what we have today'.
Unless I misunderstood your observation Mel.

Kind regards,
Andre
