Self inquiry, or atma vichara in sanskrit, has always been around for thousands 
of years with numerous proposed solutions.  I have learned a lot from 
discussions with John Sherman (johnsherman.org) about this.  He uses the simple 
technique of "looking at yourself", as proposed by Ramana, which is not a 
spiritual technique at all.  Try it out.
