John (I think) said:
The fact that he thought his was the only true attack upon what he termed SOM,
was not an indictment of his thought - rather it was a confirmation that he was
joining a cabal of our greatest minds in seeing this problem, from his own
unique view, forging his own path up the mountain.

dmb says:

I think that's about right. In fact, one of the things I wanted to do in my
talk at Oxford was to show the parallels between Pirsig and James but I
explained that Pirsig discovered this after he wrote ZAMM. He had dismissed
James but was prompted to take another look after ZAMM was published and was
astonished to find the he had independently arrived at the same conclusions. To
demonstrate this, I did not use Lila at all to line them up. It was easy too,
despite the fact that radical empiricism, pragmatism and James are never even
mentioned in ZAMM.
