Mary: I didn't even know it is superbowl sunday so that means you're more of a jock than me. Yea, you can get "On The Road" from Ant's site. Costs a few bucks. Four of us followed the ZAMM route (Rebbeca, Gav, Ant and me) back in 2006 and he added that footage to some other stuff to produce the movie. It won best documentary at a film festival in England last fall. His first one is mostly about the amateur philosophy conference he put together in Liverpool in 2005. That one might interest an insider like you but any Pirsig fan would get a kick out of "On The Road". Not sure if I know what it means to characterize something as an expression of SOM so I don't know what would count as a counter-example. How about 2+X=5? How does that express SOM? I don't see it. But I don't think SOM can be equated with the intellectual level because there are so many examples of the intellectual dismantling of SOM. William James and John Dewey both explicitly attacked it a hundred years ago. Hegel went after it 200 years ago. Rejecting SOM is practically the definition of postmodernism. How can that happen if intellect is SOM? As I see it, the philosophers that have rejected SOM count as a whole pile of counterexamples. If intellect and SOM were the same thing, Pirsig would not be able to write books disputing it and we would not be able to understand any such book. We'd be trapped with nowhere else to go. There'd be no possibility of conceiving reality in any other terms, but this is already a fact. Pirsig's books are exhibits "A" and "B" in the case against it. To equate SOM with the intellectual level is like equating the biological level with fish. Or better yet, dinosaurs. They say birds are dinosaurs, the ones that didn't go extinct. I suppose SOM is like that. All the big versions will die out and only the little harmless versions will be left. No more "thunder lizards" stomping around just little feathery flights. This is what radical empiricism does to subjects and objects. Instead of being the essential realities that make experience possible, they are just concepts derived from experience and used for practical purposes. I mean, one can use the terms without committing to them as THEE substances upon which all reality rests. The pragmatist showed us that you don't have to jump out of the world or invent a new language to solve this problem. So, who's playing this year? Hope your team wins, you big jock.
