The problem, as I closed my post with, is not in the form,
but in the impetus to literalize. I also might say that some
forms of symbolic encoding have been so cemented over
the years, it is really hard to get past this illusion.
...
"Definitions" tend towards literal, "approach" tends
towards metaphor (the way I use them in my post). What
we forget ... is that "literal" is really a dead metaphor, or a
very cemented one. Hey, don't get me wrong, we depend
a lot on literalized language.
Matt:
Sure, but what I was trying to punch up is the point at
which you have to say, because of how you've arranged
things, that "we depend a lot on" "this illusion."
I'm wondering what the point is in saying that we depend
on illusions. It seems like a concession to paradox-mongers.
And, too, why is the "impetus to literalize" a problem? If
literalized symbolic codes are otherwise called "typical
communication" (or "how I order a burrito"), then where,
exactly, is the problem? I do, after all, successfully attain
burritos.
I'm requesting more refinement in the literal/metaphorical
distinction. I agree about symbols, that they are dead
metaphors, I just think moving past illusion-talk is a good,
next step in trying to figure out how best to frame the
contrast between Dynamic and static. I think a lot of
illusion-talk obscures, muddies, and misleads us in
relationship to what Dynamic Quality is.
If "finger pointing at the moon" is an acceptable locution
for describing DQ, then once one becomes post-SOM/illusion,
when does that locution become a definition? Why is it
that when I say "DQ is X," if I fill it in with "a finger pointing
at the moon" I get hurrahs, but if I fill it in with "a neuron
firing in the brain" I get boos?
In other words: have you ever noticed that the linguistic
signal for a "definition" is exactly the same as the
linguistic signal for a "metaphor"?
Definition: "A rose _is_ a plant with thorns on it."
Metaphor: "My love _is_ a rose."
