hey arlo thankyou for the very kind comparison but please now let me shoot myself in the feet... i am not sure i totally agree with bob here. the 4th level as the manipulation of abstract symbols...well it seems a bit dry. what about imagination, dreaming...? i am being purposely tentative here.... jaynes' conception i think is different - the idea of an abstract analogue world - a dreaming lab..
does this all hinge on our conception of art? how does it fit? the code of art is DQ/sq right? but Dq cannot exist separate from sq...does it fit that art (strictly speaking) is the highest static quality? does it therefore sit atop the fourth level? the artistic process is the process of creation itself. it is the source of new sq patterns, latched from a continual and purposeful immersion in DQ by the artist....that is, the artist's question/desire/initial idea (or struction as jaynes would say) is interrogated in the silence of meditative contemplation....which allows DQ to interrupt a solution/synthesis, leading to a new struction and so on - a dance of creation, LiLa. is this process 'the skillful manipulation of abstract symbols'? - or is it more than that....i don't know. --- On Fri, 26/2/10, ARLO J BENSINGER JR <[email protected]> wrote: > From: ARLO J BENSINGER JR <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [MD] Capitalism: my experience > To: [email protected] > Received: Friday, 26 February, 2010, 1:54 PM > [Ron] > But it would'nt be as much fun without these guys, they do > spice things up... > > [Arlo] > John had recently said how much we need Jesters, and while > he was (I'm pretty > sure) thinking of Jester in the grand Merry Prankster > tradition, I am reminded > of one of the first words of caution I was given when I > joined the list "Don't > mind Platt, he's the comic book villain of the list", and > that image of him > with as Dasterdly Whiplash, or Dick Dasterdly (from Whacky > Races) or Dudley Do > Right's foil Snidely Whiplash stays with me to this day. > > And while its often more a funny-sad than a funny-haha kind > of thing, the > bizzarro twisting that forces them to proclaim mathematics > a "social level > pattern" is certainly one of the recent contenders for > funniest post of the > month.
