Ron, I don't know what you mean, in this instance, by symbolic or manipulated. Patterns seem to be activated in consciousness for less than a moment, and most outside awareness.
If you are asking if all concepts are symbolic and manipulated than aren't they intellectual patterns? I'd say no. I cannot see it possible unless you are totally mindful of each pattern, which I'd bet you are are not. But maybe you were asking for some other reason.
