As a youngman and recently of legal drinking age,
instead of going to clubs I prefered old stinky holes
in the wall.
I'd strike up conversations with bar fly's, bar tenders
and just your local average everyday regular.
Well the neatest conversations were with the owner
of a bar in Lancaster P.A.
Old man Lazues, an ex-Uboat capt. used to tell me
when it was just us in the room and a few dunkleweiss's
how the Nazi years were the best in Germany. After
WW1 and the depression, he said, things were really
booming, national pride had returned, good jobs, good
wages, infrastructure being built, the grandure of parades.
How beautiful germany was. "It was ideal" he said.
Everyone was fiercely patriotic and it really did feel like
the rise of divine empire. He used the phrase "god ordained".
Everyone loved Hitler. You should have seen it, he'd tell me.
"We were building a new tomorrow, it was very exciting times"
He used to remark how similar it was here in the states and he'd chuckle
"but your Hitlers tell us to believe diffrently"
