I thought about this some more Andre, and I can see Struggle, like a fish
struggling to make it out of the sea an onto the land.  There is constant
struggling and striving between the levels.

But competition has a different connotation - of an equal opponent.  A man
may struggle through  the mud but he does not compete with the mud.
An idea may struggle for popular acceptance but it does not compete with
society or social patterns.  Ideas compete with other ideas and make
themselves known in struggles with society.

Perhaps that's a bit semantically esoteric, but it seems important to me.
