Heather,

I do vipassana by simply entering a "non-thinking" zone. I let my self
completely experience each passing second, but not to link/relate it with
any past experience (which is to think). It is based on what I call "active
Zen" because true Zen would be to be deep in dreamless sleep or to be dead.

There's a very interesting idea I conceived yesterday that relates to the
above-mentioned concept of "layers of being": dead, passive, or active (by
the way, the word Aum also signifies these three states of being).
True unhappiness is caused not by pain, but by the thinking that follows the
pain. If I have toothache (which I occasionally do, if there is quick change
in oral temperature), my natural reaction is to think "why is this
happening? and why to me? how can I stop it?". This type of reaction
signifies non-acceptance of a certain type of experience. However, true
nobility lies in accepting all experiences. The human body has its way of
fighting the abnormality (if any) anyway. Thus, to reduce pain's effect and
to overcome fear of pain, I believe it is necessary to accept reality as it
is (this also means exercising free will, because htat's a part of reality
too).
