I guess by "...higher level of consciousness..."
your defining this as 'information that is processed
provides insight' and thus, the more information that
we process the larger our insight via information,
thus, a 'higher consciousness'.
I can see this, for we do have to be aware of
more 'stuff' now-a-days'. Not only what advertisers
want us to be aware of, but also, what people just
have is more than what people used to have. Try to
show a pre-European Amerindian a TV and he might break
it and use the glass to kill a deer. These are static
events. Try and give a U.S. business person a spear
and he might just laugh and ask where can I buy a
steak around here.
While I sit watching thoughts go by, I'm not
trying to achieve a higher consciousness by the way.

What I mean by higher consciousness is an expansion of perception, an
increase in awareness and enhanced ability to integrate information into
knowledge.
We have expanded our perception in a host of ways from telescopes that peer
at distant galaxies to satellites that can read the license plate on your
car from space. Right now you can Google webcams and see live what is
happening in hundreds even thousands of places across the planet. We can
listen to live or recorded conversations on everything from sex to Star
Wars.
I gave the example of Mickey Rooney not long ago. We have film of Mickey
from his youth to his old age. We are aware of his mannerisms and the tone
of his voice and how they have changed over a life time. This is a level of
history never possible in the past.
This is not just more, this is a qualitative jump in consciousness,
awareness and ability to understand and interact with the world.
