Multiple reasons, to be sure, but for me the primary reason is the same reason we've invented every technology: to augment human capability. In this case, human intelligence in particular. I'm looking forward to these technologies for the same reasons I benefit from use computers & the Internet. As Krimel says, he already feels that Google enhances his intellect. Imagine a neural implant that allowed you access to Google through thought alone. Imagine enhancements to human intelligence that allowed you to remember things as well as a computer memory. Sign me up. As for stand-alone artificial intelligence, I share some of your ambivalence, but I think that if it's possible, it will be done. I believe Kurzweil addresses the technological determinacy issues fairly convincingly.
