Carol, you said the average was counted on the 3 passages of the Benchmark.  
Actually, according to the literature from the University of Oregon, it isn't  
the average. They take the middle score and count that as the student's wpm  
speed. For example, if they score 68 on the 1st, 77 on the second and 72 on 
the  third, the student's wpm would  be 72.  Which leads to the question,  why 
test on all three? If you can see which passage of the 3 is leveled in the  
middle it seems it would make sense to skip reading the other 2 and only read  
the middle one. I do have my students read all three because I have found that  
they don't all do best on the same passage.
