Deb, I have scheduled reading and writing in the afternoon (1:30-3:00) for the last 4 years and love it! In the morning I have math (tried that for one brief time in the afternoon, ugh), along with science, social studies and word work. I find my 5th graders are able to focus well during the quieter moments while reading or writing, and enjoy the discussions and sharing times in the afternoon. Paula

Im curious to know what time of day 1-5 teachers teach reading and if you have found research to support your choice of time. My "gut" is that the last period of the day is not optimal but would appreciate feedback from this group! Thank You!
