If the school would pay for the book and provide the time, they would do it to meet the requirements of professional development to keep their certificates valid. So...I have found a reading teacher who does read professionally and a friend who has relocated to California who I talk to as often as possible. It is very isolating to work in a building where even the principal is uninterested in reading about the profession and in fact does not even recognize the names that are discussed on this listserve. I know that at every school you can find at least one more more teachers that say come the end of the year that they are not going to have anything to do with teaching all summer. I am really curious as to how many teachers in your school, to your knowledge, actually take it upon themselves to do their own professional development. This can be in the form of reading, classes, or workshops. What percentage of teachers at your school actually do this?
