Your changes sound like the systems that are in place for our K-5 building now.
We began with Strategies That Work as the framework for teaching comprehension
strategies. The Daily 5 has been successfully implemented in K-2. However, we
have made some
adjustments. As Literacy Coach I did not feel the Daily 5 Read to Self allowed
for teachers to" kid watch" and then follow through with reading conferences.
At the K-5 level we have put a strong emphasis on independent reading. (not
DEAR)Teachers are
conferencing, students are responding to their writing and increasing their
reading stamina. We follow the Fountas/Pinnell guided reading approach and use
their Benchmark Assessment as well. Teachers have bee trained in administering
running records as
well. Another resource we have used is Reading With Meaning and Comprehension
From the Ground Up.
