We use the RW model (Caulkins) but are beginning to modify it to our students' needs. The format is good, though I like the CAFE model because management is so important to set up a successful year. Yes, it takes time but it pays off. It sets up a routine and structure so needed for RW. RW does not really have this specific component. I also believe the mini lesson should be longer than RW recommends, particularly when using picture books. Other RW programs follow a similar format with modifications. We have a 90 minute block with a goal of 40 minutes independent reading for upper elementary. Writing is separate. Since we do not use the CAFE model, I have used components on my own. Their books were helpful and I subscribed for a year to their online service in which they incorporate modeling through use of videos. Plus, lots of ideas, model forms, and ideas from other members. I think they have expanded into grades 3-5.

I am going to a class this AM- but can email more info later. We need to implement the model (students reading on their own level rather than drag the class thru one novel) before teachers have something to manage. > > Please share any insight you all have into this! > > Thanks! > > norma > > > An old man once said, "There comes a time in your life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it.
