If my thinking is right.....Daily 5 is the management piece---for students to be reading/writing independently in the 5 areas so that you can teach CAFE -which is the teaching that happens during a mini lesson and students then practice what you have taught them as well as in small groups and conferencing during the daily 5 block. Our school uses that approach for the most part...Daily 5 and either CAFE/guided reading.
