Spent the day yesterday birding Cass with Molly Malecek, Larry Olson, and Dale
Yerger.  Many Tennessee and Blackpoll Warblers still moving through the area,
along with smaller numbers of other migrant songbirds.  Of note were 5 American
Avocets at the Cass Lake Sewer Ponds (also seen earlier in the day by Jeff
Stephenson).  Connecticut Warbler and Yellow-bellied Flycatcher were present in
the bog along County 35.  Good birding,

In yesterday's post the name should be ring-NECKED duck; shouldn't
have thought about the gulls present, as "ring-billed" slips in too
easily.

Subject: Greater White-fronted Geese, Lake Byllesby, Dakota Cty

At around 11 am today, I saw at least 14 G. White-fronted Geese on Lake
Byllesby. They were with Canada Geese and Mallards at the far northwest end
of the lake.

There is a Dakota Cty Park entrance about a 1/4 mile east of the Hwy 56/88
intersection, accessed from a pull-off on the south side of 88. It's
possible to park a few cars on the pull-off, but park on the shoulder of 88
if it's too wet. Walk the trail on the other side of the gate to an open
area, bearing down a hill to your right to find an opening to the lake. You
can also go through a wooded area to your left to get to the edge of the
lake.  I scoped from the beach, and found the geese in the farthest
northwest corner.  I also saw 3 Green-winged Teal close to shore at this
location. There is a little open water close to the beach off Lakeside
Cemetery, east of this spot, but most of the waterfowl were at the west end
this morning.

Yesterday while fishing on S. Center Lake in Lindstrom/Center City, there
were a pair of adult Eagles frequently flying overhead, a lovely sight on
such a warm spring day while there's still over 2 ft of ice!!

Must be a nest in the area... Anyone know where it is?

Jim Mattsson tried to send this message yesterday, but was unsuccessful. I'm=
forwarding it for him today. With the southwest winds, most of the birds we=
re seen in WI airspace. Some did venture into MN.

This afternoon while walking at the Bass Ponds in Bloomington, Hennepin County
a vocalizing Killdeer flew into the Hog Back Ridge Ponds rocky shoreline.  This
was a welcome spring time sight on such a warm, balmy afternoon here in the
Metro!

Subject: Mute Swan ~ Rice Co.

Hi everyone=2C

At around 2:15 this afternoon I found a Mute Swan at Wells Lake. Many of =
you may remember that Rice County hosted Mute Swans for a number of years. =
I haven't seen a Mute Swan in Rice County since February of 2007=2C so I'm =
not sure about the origin of this bird=2C but I can tell you that in all th=
e years I did see Mute Swans in the county=2C I never saw them at Wells Lak=
e.=20

=20

Other FOY birds today were: Killdeer=2C Cormorant=2C Ring-billed Gull and=
 Eastern Meadowlark.

=20

Wells Lake hosted 13 species of duck today along with a couple of Greater=
White-fronted Geese. I also had several flocks of GWF Geese flying over to=
day. Numbers totaled well above 150 birds.=20

=20

Species numbers were much=2C much higher today than in the past=2C especi=
ally dabbler ducks: pintails=2C shovelers=2C wood ducks=2C green-winged tea=
l and wigeon.=20

=20

Also of note - Yesterday=2C I had a single Great Blue Heron on the colony=
island at Wells Lake. Today there were probably well over 40.

=20

Good birding!
