Shorebird numbers at sewer ponds have seemed low in the county this season.
Lake levels are low, however, so the south shore of Winnie and the beach at
Sugar Point on Leech might be worth checking if you are in the area.  On
Sunday, 9/6, Dale Yerger, Andrew Birch, and I saw a Red Knot hanging with a
Stilt Sandpiper near Pelican Island (outside the closed area) on Leech Lake.
The knot was a county bird for us all, and may be a first fall record for the
species in Cass.  Also present were several Semi-palmated Plovers.  Baird's,
Semi-palmated, and Least Sandpipers have been seen at various mud flats and
sewer ponds throughout the county.  Good birding,

Ben Wieland
