It was a fairly active morning at Rapids Lake MVNWR especially compared to last
Friday. I found 12 warbler species, the highlight being a Connecticut Warbler.
Other warblers for the morning were 7 Nashville, 2 Tennessee, 2
Orange-crowned, 2 Yellow, 1 Yellow-rumped, 1 Bay-breasted, 1 Black and White, 1
Magnolia Warbler, 4 Common Yellowthroat, 1 American Redstart, and 1 Ovenbird.
These were mainly in 2 small waves of migrants with a few loners out there.
The 2 waves also were great for Vireo. One wave had 2 Blue-headed and a
Warbling Vireo, while the other had 3-4 Philadelphia and a Red-eyed Vireo. My
5th Vireo species of the day(1st time I can remember having this in a single
day) was a Yellow-throated singing from a spot he has been all summer. The
larger of the 2 waves also had a Brown Thrasher. He was probably a summer
resident attracted to the commotion, but I guess it's just as likely to be a
migrant. Other migrants today were 2 Least Flycatchers, 4 Ruby-crowned
Kinglets, 5 Lincoln's Sparrow, and several White-throated Sparrow. While last
Friday was the day to see American White Pelican, this morning I counted 178
Double-crested Cormorant in many flocks.
