With many lakes now open, more waterfowl has moved into the area. Maria Lake
and Assumption Lake had significant numbers of waterfowl, mainly Lesser Scaup,
Ring-necked Duck, Canvasback, and Bufflehead. After striking out on finding
Northern Pintail along 150th St. last week, I found one there earlier in the
week. Today there were two beautiful males. The variety is still pretty
much the same along 150th St.(didn't see Ruddy Duck there today but I'm sure
they were mixed in somewhere). There were fewer ducks at that location, and
most of the Tundra Swans had left. Saw my first Pied-billed Grebes(Maria Lake
and Chevalle wetlands) this morning as well. The only significant number of
waterfowl on the small lakes across Carver Park yesterday were 36 Common
Merganser. The only raptor sightings today were a Turkey Vulture at Rapids
Lake and a female Northern Harrier north of Assumption Lake. Otherwise, a pair
of Eastern Phoebe have returned to an area they have nested in the past at
Rapids Lake MVNWR, and 7 Golden-crowned Kinglets were scattered along the
western shore of Rapids Lake.
