I wouldn't say that those components make Mozilla less stable.  I would 
say that the way they are tied together leads to ,pre problems when 
Mozilla crashes.  I can read news messages just fine, close the Mail / 
News window, launch a new Navigator window, for some reason crash while 
in Navigator, and then come back and see my message counts and views in 
Mail / News messed up.  Wouldn't it make more sense to save / freeze the 
preferences for each component once it is closed?
