I actually really like the idea of showing the number of new messages.
A long time ago, or so it seems, there was a notification area in the
side bar. One of the notifications that mail used to send out was how
many new messages there were and what server they were on. Also, one of
the cool features of My Netscape, in my opinion, is that if you also
have a Webmail account, it tells you how many new messages you have.
It's nice to know the number. Whether this is a feature coming any time
soon is probably a matter of whether anyone wants to do it and if
there's a good ui for it. I also don't think it's wrong for us to put
the icons that are in the task bar onto the main toolbars. I would want
it to be customizable so that it could go where it is now if I wanted it
to, but I could imagine many users wanting it in a very easy to see place.
