I first altered, then quit, reopened, saw there was no change,
and verified that my changes were still there.  I edited
mailnews.js, though.  I just repeated the process with
prefs.js, to no avail.  There's no file user.js on my system.

This is Win2k (German) with build 2001062420, JFTR.
