the shortcomings of their software?

I just altered the prefs.  Guess what?  No change.  Blue bars.

Yup.  Here's what I set:

pref("mail.quoted_style", 0);
pref("mail.quoted_size", 0);
pref("mail.quoted_graphical", false);
pref("mail.quoteasblock", false);
pref("mail.display_glyph", false);
pref("mail.display_struct", true);
pref("mail.send_struct", false);
pref("mailnews.send_plaintext_flowed", false);
pref("mailnews.display.disable_format_flowed_support", true);
