Oh, yes that is the type of configurability which is the standard on
Unix. Sure, it's not the right thing for a normal user, but I think, few
normal users care about this discussion. Most don't even understand what
HTML is. (But see below.)

You're arguing with the wrong one. I proposed that we have the option to
disable the bars for non-flowed plaintext in the prefs dialog. Others
voted against it.
