Thanks for adding it to the list Mark.  I think your idea for low & highpass options 
would work very well.  It would also fix the VBR problem I posted.

I can see it would benefit sound quality considerably for FM radio people who would 
want a sharp cut-off at 15khz.

I am a programmer but in a 4GL database language so I can't help directly with Lame 
development.  However, I don't understand the need for 2 variables for the filter.  
Why do you need to start applying the filter earlier than the cut-off frequency?  I 
would prefer a sharp cut-off.  If required, we may need another option to specify this 
fade-in filtering.
