When I first came here 2/4/73, direct from Brooklyn, NY, that spring I ran into
my aesthetics professor from college. We were both astonished at how remarkably
clean Minneapolis was. When that year's Aquatennial events happened, I was
delighted to see, the day after the torchlight parade or whatever, that the
Nicollet Mall was spotless. My neighborhood, then as now Central, was also
spotless. I decided that early Spring was the only dirty time of the year, when
the snow melt uncovered all the forgotten boots, shoes, mittens, hats, scarves,
etc. One trip through the wash and I still have some hats and scarves I
scavenged.
However, I live on the corner and now I watch as people stopped for the light
empty out all the garbage they have accumulated in their cars right in front of
my house. This is a definite change in the social behavior of Minneapolis. I
miss that old habit of tidiness.
