Thanks, Annie for your defense and information...

I have made a proposal to the MPRB for the reduction of the pedestrian
path width to keep it the same as it is now, at 6 feet. I believe, as
do many others, that there will continue to be cow paths next to the
pedestrian paths that are, in actuality, impervious. The change to
six feet will make the actual effect of the pedestrian path width
the requested 8 feet. The bike path will still increase from 6 to 10,
but that appears to be the requirement of the ISTEA funding.

My personal concerns are for more than water quality--they are for the
preservation of the corridor itself as a natural community. St. Paul
is in the process of spending a lot of money on a project called
"Greening the Great River Road" and the DNR is spending money to
promote and develop wildlife and green corridors because we have lost
so many of them. I do support doing the project to improve the
streambank stabilization and fixing up the trails but do not want to
risk making changes that we may regret because they will take away
from the beauty, the ability of wildlife to use it, and the other
intrinsic reasons we enjoy the corridor so much.

My experience with spending millions putting wetlands back near the
lakes tells me that sometimes our civilization has made some short
sighted environmental decisions that have been very costly in the long
run. The creek corridor is a living and changing environment because
we are using it to get rid of urban storm water. The creek is
meandering, chanellizing, and scouring down -- all actions that will
have impact on the trails. In making significant changes in that
environment, I believe it is vitally important to look at
consequences beyond our using it as a commuter corridor for bike
traffic.
