I can't make the meeting on the 14th, so here's my comments via mpls.isues.
I tend to agree with Sara's comments about maintaining the 'wild' aspect of
the creek. Build and pave wider trails and they will come in droves, along
with the urban trash they toss so casually... cans, bottles, plastic and
paper wrappers, cigarette buts, banana peels and more. Then there will be a
need for more lighting to maintain a safe environment in the evening and
better walkways to keep little old ladies (and men) upright as they stroll!
More trash cans and motorized pickup. More police patrols... more access...
Besides, the City and the MPRB can't adequately maintain the roadways,
walkways, trails, lakeshores, park buildings and ballparks, and sidewalks
they currently manage. Why add to that dilemma.
This is another example of our local units of government trying to take on
new initiatives when we can't afford and adequately manage current
activities. So what if it's federal money. The feds won't operate and
maintain the improvements after they are built. They won't pay for
lighting, trash pick up and police patrols... yada, yada... It all goes
back to priorities... defining and maintaining them.
