The construction of a blacktop biking and walking trail through city
parkland has also been an issue in the Harrison and Bryn Mawr Neighborhoods.
There are plans for a 10' trail through Bryn Mawr Meadow Park, Bassett Creek
Park and Wirth Park to connect the Luce Line to the Cedar Lake Trail.
Annie is right on the mark by saying that it is a tricky struggle balancing
the city parks' multiple uses, and balancing nature with human recreation. I
am kind of a nature buff, but also love biking on Minneapolis' wonderful
network of trails. Park programs to reduce non-native plants and to increase
native plantings help to make areas more natural. Placing bituminous and
concrete pavement obviously makes an area less natural. Even mowed turf
grass lawn areas are actually not all that natural, although great for
picnics or playing frisbee with the kids.
While I greatly appreciate concern for runoff pollution, Annie is probably
correct in saying that most rain runoff will infiltrate into the ground,
instead of flowing into the creek. With some careful planning, near
zero-runoff into the creek should be attainable. Small raingardens could be
strategically placed in areas where sheet flow infiltration may be
inadequate.
